Welcome to Cephas Music School

A Place Where Music Grows Naturally

At Cephas Music School, we believe that music is a journey — one that shapes not just skills, but hearts and character. We’re here to walk alongside students at every step, whether they’re just starting out or pursuing music more seriously.

While we do prepare students for graded music exams, our teaching goes far beyond exam pieces. Our focus is on building well-rounded musicians — students who truly enjoy playing, listening, creating, and expressing through music.

🎯 Our Mission

To inspire a lifelong love for music through caring instruction, meaningful learning, and genuine artistic growth.

💡 Our Philosophy

We know that every student is unique. That’s why we tailor our lessons to match their pace, personality, and goals. Whether it’s learning a new piece, improvising a melody, or playing in an ensemble, we believe that joy and curiosity should always be at the heart of music-making.

At Cephas, we encourage students to explore beyond the textbook — to listen deeply, to express freely, and to appreciate music as a lifelong companion.

🎓 Meet Our Founder and Principal:

Dr. Andjelita Chendra (曾博士)

“I’ve always believed that music should be something we carry with us for life — not just for exams or performances. At Cephas, we do our best to guide students toward musical excellence, but more importantly, we want them to find joy, confidence, and meaning in what they do.”
Dr. Andjelita Chendra

As the founder and principal of Cephas Music School, Dr. Andjelita Chendra brings a clear vision to her work: to raise the standard of music education in Singapore while making learning deeply personal and meaningful. Her decision to establish Cephas was born out of a passion to create a nurturing space where music is not only taught — but lived, experienced, and loved.

She believes music education should extend beyond technical training, encompassing emotional well-being, creativity, and character. Dr. Chendra is also deeply committed to her students’ overall well-being, understanding that growth happens best in a caring, supportive environment.

In addition to her teaching, she has mentored and trained many music educators — including members of the Cephas faculty — ensuring that her values of sincerity, excellence, and compassion are at the heart of every classroom.

Dr. Andjelita Chendra is a classically trained pianist and educator from Indonesia, with an international background in both performance and teaching. She moved to Belgium in her youth and was selected to study at the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she earned her PhD in Piano Performance and Music Pedagogy, under the tutelage of Prof Monsieur Jean Brouwer, Prof Monsieur Daniel Blumenthal, and Prof Madame Patricia Montero to name a few.

She spent two decades in Europe, where she actively performed as a soloist and chamber musician, participated in international competitions, and taught students from various backgrounds. In addition to piano, Dr. Chendra is an accomplished flautist and is well-versed in a wide range of instruments — a versatility that enhances her holistic approach to music education.

Following her time in Europe, she continued her work in Indonesia and Singapore, where she remains deeply involved in music education and curriculum development. Her teaching blends European musical rigour with an empathetic, student-centered philosophy. She is also regularly invited to serve as a judge at music competitions, where her experience and discernment are highly respected.

🎶 Our History:

From Medan Music School to Cephas

Medan Music School: A Legacy of Classical Music Education

The Medan Music School, established in 1948 by Nonnie S. Y. Lemye-Tjong, holds a pivotal place in the history of classical music education in Indonesia. Originally known as Sekolah Musik Murni, the school became a cornerstone for nurturing musical talent in Medan and beyond. Nonnie, the youngest daughter of philanthropist Tjong A Fie, was a classically trained pianist who studied at the Geneva Conservatory in Switzerland. Her passion for music and education inspired her to create an institution that fostered classical music in a region lacking formal training opportunities.

Founding and Growth

Under Nonnie’s leadership, the school quickly gained recognition for its excellence in piano education and later expanded its curriculum to include violin, voice, and other disciplines. As its reputation grew, it was renamed Sumatra Conservatoire, reflecting its broader impact and ambitions. The school blended Western classical techniques with local cultural sensibilities, creating a unique approach to music education.

Mdm. Karminia Bongsu

Leadership of Mdm. Karminia Bongsu

A significant chapter in the school’s history came under the stewardship of Mdm. Karminia Bongsu, who served as principal for an extended period. A recipient of the Premier Prix (Master’s equivalent) from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Mdm. Bongsu brought exceptional musical mastery and a modern pedagogical approach to the institution. Her leadership preserved the school’s dedication to high standards while introducing innovative teaching methods, ensuring its relevance in a changing musical landscape.

Connection to Cephas Music School

The legacy of the Medan Music School extends to Cephas Music School in Singapore. Dr. Andjelita Chendra, Mdm. Bongsu’s daughter and an accomplished graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, leads Cephas Music School with the same commitment to excellence. Drawing on the foundational principles established in Medan, the school integrates classical traditions with innovative teaching, continuing the family’s dedication to music education.

Enduring Impact

The Medan Music School’s influence remains a cornerstone of Southeast Asia’s musical heritage. Generations of musicians trained there have gone on to perform and teach across Indonesia and abroad. Its legacy reflects the vision and dedication of its founder, Nonnie S. Y. Lemye-Tjong, and the transformative leadership of Mdm. Karminia Bongsu. Together, they laid the groundwork for a thriving culture of classical music education, inspiring institutions like Cephas Music School to carry the torch forward.

🌱 Why “Cephas”?

Cephas (pronounced “SEE-fuhs”) is a name with deep meaning.
Derived from Aramaic, Cephas means “rock” — a symbol of strength, foundation, and steadfast growth.

We chose this name because we believe every student deserves a strong, lasting musical foundation. Whether they’re just beginning or already on their path, we’re here to support them — patiently, steadily, and with heart.

Just like a rock, music becomes something our students can stand on, lean into, and carry with them for life.
