We’ve become accustomed to thinking that learning music should start young. Though many would agree, adult beginners should be given a chance too! I picked up my first violin lesson with Cephas at 32 years old. There was a lot to learn, so I’m very happy to have been given the chance to perform at the school’s year-end concert after less than a year of lessons!

Over the past 6 years, Dr Chendra has not only taught me how to play violin with proper technique, but also to love the instrument and music of all genres. She is deeply passionate, full of energy, and truly cares about her students within and outside of class. She makes sure her students can sight-read, practise technique, learn at their own pace and play the music they love. She gives them ample opportunities to perform, from year-end concerts to competitions and exams, even helping with extra practice sessions and buying a new violin and bow.
Violin is a notoriously challenging instrument, but with Dr Chendra’s passion, sharp ear for pitch and ability to refine fine technique, I have stayed motivated. My favourite parts of lessons were when she played piano accompaniment, with her own musical interpretation, so I could hear and feel how beautiful a piece is meant to be. Not all teachers do this. It’s one of the ways Dr Chendra goes the extra mile. Overall, I strongly recommend Cephas Music School 🙂
